Martin Fowler is an author, speaker, consultant and general loud-mouth on software development.

He concentrates on designing enterprise software - looking at what makes a good design and what practices are needed to come up with good design. He has pioneered object-oriented technology, refactoring, patterns, agile methodologies, domain modeling, the Unified Modeling Language (UML), and Extreme Programming.

He's the Chief Scientist at ThoughtWorks - an international application development company, and has written five books on software development: Analysis Patterns, UML Distilled (now in its 3rd edition), Refactoring, Planning Extreme Programming (with Kent Beck), and Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture.

He also writes articles regularly on his site at Martin Fowler's bliki.

7月14日，由ThoughtWorks中国公司与CSDN网站联合主办的第二届“敏捷中国”软件技术大会在北京丽亭华苑酒店成功举行。共有超过800名软件从业者到现场参与了本次盛会。这也是ThoughtWorks迄今为止在全球范围内组织的最大规模的会议。大会的宣传词这样写道：

软件项目需要敏捷，企业同样需要敏捷。一支敏捷的团队能够在项目中收获成功，而一家敏捷的企业能够在市场的风雨中屹立不倒。本次“敏捷中国”技术大会将会集中展现塑造敏捷企业所需的方方面面：业界领先的敏捷项目管理工具；极大提升软件开发效率的新语言和新框架；数据库领域的敏捷实践；全方位的敏捷项目管理指导；还有身临其境的亲身体验。来自开源社区和ThoughtWorks公司的技术领导者们将带领听众全面感受敏捷企业。

在为大会致开幕词时，ThoughtWorks中国公司总经理郭晓谈到了软件的本质问题：从技术角度、从社会角度、业务角度等不同的角度看，软件的本质是不相同的。郭晓指出商用软件开发正在呈现越来越多服务业的特征，并指出中国的软件企业在服务意识方面还存在缺陷：

从商业的角度来看，软件的本质是一个服务行业，它是通过为其他行业提供服务来体现价值的。因此，并不应当孤立地看软件的价值，它应当被置于整个社会和商业环境中。而我国的软件工作和IT部门内却普遍存在着一个不良的现象——“缩在产品和软件本身的圈子里，”并没有站在整体的生态圈中去考虑软件的价值。

企业走向敏捷需要“两条腿”的支撑：其一是敏捷方法和工作方式，其二是大幅度提高生产率的工具。敏捷项目管理工具Mingle的产品经理Adam Monago为现场听众介绍了这个全新的项目管理工具，并得到了良好反响。ThoughtWorks负责Mingle早期预览计划的Jayne Barnes在一个内部邮件中写道：

尽管不知道你具体讲了什么内容，但Adam，你的演讲非常成功。从周六晚上开始，有大量来自中国的用户注册了Mingle预览版。

Ruby on Rails在互联网领域的巨大成功使之被认为是有效提升软件开发效率的工具。Chad Wathington，RubyWorks的产品经理，在下午的演讲中列举了在企业级环境中使用Ruby on Rails的机遇与挑战。XRuby的主要开发者郑晔稍后介绍了Ruby on JVM（在JVM平台上运行Ruby程序）的最新进展。另一位引起广泛兴趣的演讲者是《数据库重构》一书的作者Pramod Sadalage，他在结束演讲后还在现场进行了签名售书。
